Many of you have been emailing today asking about the children and staff in Lubumbashi. I want to assure you we have been closely monitoring the situation all day along with our team (both those in DRC and in Lubumbashi). There was a small militia that stormed the U.N. building in Lubumbashi today, temporarily taking control. It did not last long and the President’s Republican Guard has regained control (with the assistance of U.N. peacekeepers) We are told that everything is fine, and at this time our LBB team is enroute to DRC and still planning on their Lubumbashi visit. The children and our staff were never in any danger.
Lubumbashi is, quite possibly, the greatest resource the DRC has, and it is heavily protected. Our team was adamant today that we will not see this become anything like the northeastern regions of the Congo. We were told this was a small “unknown” band of militants and they were easily overpowered.
We will continue to monitor this closely and will let you know if we hear of any changes.
